The practical difference between UGC creators and influencers, what each is for, what each costs, and how DTC brands decide where to put the first dollar.
Short answer: influencer marketing rents an audience. UGC buys ad content. An influencer has followers who trust them, so their value is reach and social proof when they post about you. A UGC creator makes videos that perform in paid ads, regardless of how many followers they have, and nothing needs to be posted to their profile at all. If your ads are starved for creative, you need UGC. If nobody knows or trusts your brand yet, you need influencers. Most DTC brands eventually run both, but almost nobody should start with both.
The confusion, and why it costs money
The two get merged because the same person can be both. But when a brand briefs an influencer like a UGC creator, they overpay for followers they did not need. When a brand briefs a UGC creator expecting reach, they get a great video and no audience, then call the channel a failure. The brief, the pricing and the success metric are different for each, and mixing them is the single most common mistake I see in creator budgets.
How to choose your first dollar
Ask what breaks first if you do nothing. If your paid social fatigue is the problem, ads dying, costs creeping, the same three creatives running for months, start with UGC ads: fastest path from spend to result, because the content plugs into a machine you already run. If awareness and trust are the problem, nobody searching your name, cold traffic bouncing, start with influencer campaigns, and give them time, because trust compounds slower than clicks.
When they work together
The strongest programs feed one into the other. Influencer posts that perform become whitelisted ads. UGC creators who show genuine reach get seeded as influencers. Affiliate links turn both into measurable sales, the way the Kiwabi program turned gifted posts into a 10x return through commissions. The formats stop being categories and become stages.
One honest caveat
UGC results show up in weeks. Influencer results show up in months. Brands that judge influencer programs on UGC timelines kill them exactly when they are about to work.
